Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Product

What types of products are available?

The TWOOD brand includes two product categories: barrels and oak alternatives. On the barrel side, our offer includes a 225L barrel, available in mixed fine and medium grain, with 4 toast levels to ensure simplicity and accessibility. No grain selection is possible.

For oak alternatives, we offer French oak chips and staves available in several toast levels depending on the product.

What types of wood are used?

TWOOD products are made from 100% French oak.

Our barrel offer consists of a mixed grain barrel available in 4 toast levels to ensure simplicity and accessibility. No grain selection is possible.

Regarding oak alternatives, TWOOD offers 100% French oak chips and staves.

Can I choose the grain of the wood for my barrel?

Our offer consists of mixed grain barrels available in 4 toast levels to ensure simplicity and accessibility. No grain selection.

Are there different sizes available?

The TWOOD barrel is available in a single size: 225L, similar to a traditional Bordeaux barrel. To view the hooping plan, please refer to the product specifications.

For oak alternatives, chips are packaged in 10 kg bags with a ready-to-use infusion net, and staves are available in boxes of 40 staves (7 mm thick) with 2 ties (approx. 8 kg).

Are there different thicknesses?

To allow a second life for the barrel, we opted for 27 mm thickness, enabling deep cleaning.

Our staves are available in 7 mm thickness.

What are the advantages of TWOOD oak alternatives?

TWOOD oak alternatives are made from 100% French oak, with precise aromatic profiles. They provide a simple and accessible solution while enhancing cooperage co-products.

Can I get TCA analysis for my barrel?

Our barrels are systematically tested for TCA before shipment. Sending individual analysis results per barrel is available as an option to select in your cart when placing your order. No analysis can be sent afterward if not included initially.

Oak alternatives are not concerned by these analyses.

I would like my logo on my barrel: how can I do this?

Our barrels are delivered branded with the TWOOD logo and the selected toast only. For any other request, please contact us.

Are TWOOD barrels PEFC certified?

The French oak used for TWOOD barrels mainly comes from forests managed by the ONF. Traceability is ensured in accordance with EU EUDR regulation. In this context, PEFC certification is not considered necessary.

How to choose the toast level of TWOOD oak alternatives?

The impact of each toast is detailed in each product sheet, with a complete table outlining effects and recommended contact times.

How to choose between chips and staves?

Contact time is a key factor: chips, being smaller, provide fast extraction (10 days in fermentation or 1 to 3 months in ageing). Staves provide slower, more integrated extraction (2 to 5 months).

Commissioning & Use

I have just received my product, what should I do?

For TWOOD barrels, as with any barrel, please follow the usage instructions.

Tests have shown a slight increase in SO2 loss during filling compared to traditional barrels (around 20%), due to deeper wine penetration. This should be anticipated with slightly higher sulfiting (minimum +0.6 mg/L active SO2) and monitored during ageing.

For oak alternatives, refer to our instructions. Recommended dosages are indicated in product sheets. Store unused woods in original sealed packaging in a dry, odor-free environment.

How to use chips in oenology?

Chips are immersed in tanks using the integrated net to bring structure, volume and aromatic expression.

When to use chips?

During alcoholic fermentation for structure, and during ageing for complexity and volume.

How to use staves?

Staves are fixed inside the tank using provided ties and immersed for prolonged contact.

When to use staves?

They can be used during fermentation, malolactic fermentation or ageing.

How long should oak alternatives remain in wine?

Chips: approx. 10 days (fermentation), 1–3 months (ageing).

Staves: 2–5 months.

I notice variation in barrel evaporation, is this normal?

Yes. Tests show slightly higher evaporation than traditional barrels: around 6–6.5L vs 5L per year, due to deeper wine penetration into the wood.

I notice an issue with my product, what should I do?

Please contact our quality department before any action.

What dosage for chips?

White & rosé: 0.3–2 g/L

Red: 1–4 g/L

What dosage for staves?

White & rosé: 1–4 g/L

Red: 2–6 g/L
